Mr. Richard DuBois Jr. “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” --George Santanyana
“(It won’t look good on their transcripts either.)” --Mr “D”
Over the course of this year, it is my hope that some of my love of history will rub off onto my students. To see what mankind has accomplished over the centuries offers the framework we need to see how we have become what we are. To see what seemingly insignificant individuals have done in the face of apparent insurmountable odds encourages us to strive toward greatness ourselves. To see the hand of God woven through history reveals his majesty as we are awed by the scale in which He works. Mr. “D”
9th grade WORLD GEOGRAPHY will begin with a survey of cultural differences and similarities spring-boarding off of Peter Menzel’s Material World photo study which takes a series of families from around the world and displays all of their possessions. By analyzing these photos, students will have the opportunity to see their own status in comparison to families living in Kuwait, England, China and Mali. The goal is to recognize the importance of cultural understanding in our commission to share the gospel with the world.
Next the class will move on to study the basic elements of Geography including maps, topography, climate & weather and environmental studies.
Finally the bulk of the year will consist of studying the nations of the world one continent at a time beginning with Asia.
Throughout the year, each student will present a report on the culture of a specific nation to the entire class. Students are encouraged to bring in cultural artifacts, clothing, or even food to make the presentation more memorable.
10th grade WORLD HISTORY begins with a discussion of the extraordinarily large volume of manuscripts available to support the Bible’s relevance as a historical text. Once students understand that the Bible and the history book run concurrently, attention will shift to the earliest recorded ancient cultures in Mesopotamia and proceed forward in time to Ancient Greece and Rome and then into the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Modern age. As each period passes, special attention is given to events occurring simultaneously around the world, giving students insight into what persons and events were contemporary to one another.
11th grade UNITED STATES HISTORY covers the remarkable progress our relatively young nation has made in a relatively short period of time. Beginning with the earliest European explorers and settlers, the class will move from colonial times into the formation of our nation a mere 200 years ago. From there, the class proceeds to follow each presidential administration through the trials and triumphs that have brought the United States to it’s present standing in the world today.
